Triglav was a peak that was pretty high on our list once we learned about it. All Slovenians will know this peak and many will have climbed it. I believe that this was one of the first hikes we did in Europe that required you to sleep in a hut as part of the ascent.
Triglav is an interesting mountain because it’s not super visible from the places around the Julian Alps that we’ve explored. Up until we climbed the peak, I’m not sure that we had ever laid eyes on it. But all the peaks in the vicinty we stunning enough that we had no doubt that this would be a great adventure.
Leading up to the climb I had read about a few different routes. We had decided to do it the classic way by staying in the hut below the summit. There were a few different routes to get to that hut and when I read about one route nicknamed the “mountaineers route” I couldn’t resist. Jo had assumed that we would take the classic route, and was sorely dissapointed when I drove us to the the other one.
The profile of the peak is deceiving because this was one of the steepest hikes we’ve ever done. The first mile or so was mild and then it just went straight up the side of the mountain. I believe there may have even been some “via-ferrata-like” sections that required the harnesses. Eventually we made it to the hut where we were going to spend the night. All the other hikers would have come up a different valley that was supposedly more gradual, and not needing any safety gear.
We enjoyed a beautiful sunset above the clouds in the rocky Julien Alps, found our mattresses in the hut and got a few hours of sleep. We got an alpine start the next morning. By the light of our headlamps we got into our climbing equipment and started for the ridge that would take us ot the top of Slovenia. The route was super enjoyable. As the sun was rising we got to the summit, took our summit pics, and started the steep descent down.
As with many other routes, it was the brutal descent that was the most painful. Triglav remains the index from which we guage difficulty of other peaks to this day. It was probably my choice of route, but nevertheless, it was a great adventure.
