Guadalupe Peak

Report

Jo and I had a long weekend where we decided to explore a bit in Southern New Mexico. We re-did a trip we did a number of years earlier where we went to the Carlsbad Caverns and swung by the Guadalupe Mountains for a day. This time though we decided to summit it.

It was January, but we felt good about doing it. Nothing about it seemed too hard, but when we showed up to the ranger station the ranger did her best to scare Jo off. We had done the caverns earlier that morning and were trying to do both in a day, so we showed up a at Guadalupe a bit late. The ranger told us that we should be prepared to be hiking out in the dark and that due to high winds and cold we could expect our water bottles to freeze while hiking.

Both of those warnings proved to be far from too. It was windy, but honestly not too horrible. The was a bit of snow and ice on the trail which we had brought spikes for. We ended up passing dozens of people going up and on the hike down. Guadalupe Mountain is the highest in Texas. The hike wasn’t all that special, but now we can check off Texas.

We spent that night in El Paso which was an adventure unto itself.
