Chicoma was on my list for awhile. The biggest challenge of the peak I had thought was driving out there. It ended up being around 2 hours each way. We took the Jeep because I wasn’t sure what the road conditions would be.
After the bumpy ride out there we found the trailhead and started up the trail. It was nice for like a half mile, but quickly turned into the nightmare of windfall. We hopped over fallen trees for the next 45 minutes before making it to the top. The views were better than Cabezon, with at least some clearing in the trees to see out of.
The hike down we hugged the western ridge and tried to stay outside the windfall areas. We came across some pretty crazy bear prints, but otherwise the descent was pretty uneventful. Took around 2 hours roundtrip total.
